After going overboard last month, I’m keeping it short and sweet this go-round with two recommendations:

GREEN PORNO (series, streaming on Youtube /Criterion): Isabella Rosselini has written, directed and starred in this 3-season series of micro-shorts that explores the mating rituals of various insects and other animals. They are delightfully bizarre, inventive, witty and informative. Rossellini does her research and delivers sex education in the best possible way.

LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL(in theaters): For anybody familiar with 1970s laten night talk shows, I guarantee you will at the very least be impressed by the authenticity of this original and highly unsettling horror film that chronicles the rise and outcome of a lesser known TV host. It debuted at SXSW, and I’d argue deserves most of the hype it gets. The first 95% of the film, in my mind, was pure genius. Alas, sans spoilers I’ll confess the end didn’t quite land for me, not because the intended idea wasn’t on point, but because it felt under-developed and a rapid-fire gorefest by the third act felt so rushed and over-the top, it overwhelmed the plot, thus sacrificing clarity. It was only after I went online and read a recap that I was able to make sense of the end. It’s definitely worth watching, however, and I look forward to future work by the Cairnes Brothers writing/directing team.
